DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian, and East Lothian are hosting a Jobs Roadshow in Haddington Corn Exchange on Tuesday 28th February 2017.

An amazing opportunity to meet employers who are advertising live jobs, apprenticeships and intern opportunities across a variety of industries. The event is aimed at S4 - S6 school summer leavers, young college leaver, and a young person who has left school within the last 3 years.

GTG Training would like to invite you to their Modern Apprenticeship Open Day on Thursday 9th March 2017. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into careers in mechanics, vehicle body repair, vehicle spray paint, vehicle parts, garage equipment engineering, alarm engineering, business administration and customer service. GTG Apprenticeship offers people aged 16 and over a way to earn while they learn, as they work towards a qualification, skilled employment and greater career prospects.

The event is free of charge and targeted at people aged 16+ with National 4/5 1-4 qualifications (already achieved or studying at this level)

A reminder to S6 Students who haven't paid the requested £10 deposit for the yearbook; please can this payment be made promptly.  Thanks to those who paid by the end of January as requested. 

Note that a yearbook will not be ordered for you if payment is not received.  The list of names on M.12 was a temporary indication of interest in a yearbook only (for those who asked to pay a week later than others).

Payment needs to be made online with the reference code: YB17  see knox.is/payments for information.

The total cost of the yearbook will be £22 subject to enough members of S6 ordering.  This will be confirmed by the Yearbook Committee as soon as all deposits are received.

 

Speak directly to Mr D with any specific concerns about making payment, where appropriate arrangements can be made.

The HPV vaccinations will take place for all S1 and S2 girls in the main Assembly hall on Thursday 2 February 2017.

The Social Subjects faculty are offering a number of opportunities for students to seek additional assistance/guidance on their studies of our subjects in order that they can achieve the eventual Overall Grade that they deserve in their Final Examinations and Coursework Assignments.

Our Benchmarking Assessment fortnight commences next week, pupils should ensure that they confirm exact arrangements with their teachers as some assessments will run at slightly different times to the usual periods.  Modern Language pupils will receive specific timings directly from their teachers.

There will be a pre-coursing event for all S3 pupils TODAY (Tuesday) Period 6.  There will be speakers talking about College, Pre-vocational courses and Work Experience opportunities, as well as current pupils talking about their experiences.  All pupils should register with their Period 6 teacher, who will accompany them to the 3 venues for the event.  Pupils will stay at the same venue and speakers will rotate.

All pupils are expected to be in Dress Code at all times, unless there are exceptional circumstances, in which case a note needs to be provided from home. Demerits for poor Dress Code could impact on opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities. For example, Activities Week, School Dance etc.

The Yearbook Committee are making good progress with the production of your yearbook, and have negotiated an excellent deal with the Design Company.  We need to make a deposit payment by the end of January.  As you will probably already know via Facebook, we are requesting a £10 payment by Friday 20 January 2017.  This payment should be made online with the reference code YB17 - details on how to make payment can be found at knox.is/payments.

For those who are unable to make this payment by the requested date, please speak to Mr D who will take your name and make alternative arrangements.  It is vital that we know who wishes a yearbook at this stage so that we can give a confirmed final price. It is anticipated that subject to numbers being as estimated that the total price will be £22 this year.  Failure to make payments (or alternative arrangements) will result in no yearbook being ordered for you.

No cash payments are being accepted this year.

The Q-Step Essay Competition 2017 is now open for S5 students. This year's theme is: ‘Is data good for democracy?’

The competition is hosted by the University of Oxford Q-Step Centre. Its aim is to give your students the opportunity to think about how data is used politically. The winner will receive £100 and the runner-up £50. Both essays will be published on the Q-Step website. Closing date: Friday 24 February 2017. Last year was the first ever East Lothian inter-schools competition for the Saltire Awards. Knox Academy won the competition and currently holds the shield. Awards that count towards this include 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 500 hour awards, as well as the Summit Award. The current rankings in the competition are as follows:

1st – Musselburgh Grammar School

2nd – Knox Academy

3rd – Dunbar Grammar School

4th – Preston Lodge High School

5th (joint place) – Ross High School and Harbour Point School

6th (joint place) – North Berwick High School and Loretto School

 

 Everything could still change between now and the presentation of the trophy at the Saltire Awards Ceremony in March as long as you make sure you are logging your volunteering hours on your Saltire Award Account.

EDF Energy are offering a Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship. The four year apprenticeship focuses on skills required to maintain their power stations. This could be a coal, gas or nuclear plant situated around the UK.

You will have five National 5s including Maths, two Science (or 1 Science and a Technical subject) and English. You should have a talent for practical subjects, the desire to learn and develop your skills and a willingness to relocate as required.
