Hola

Since our last update from Gracias we have travelled to the town of Copan where we visited the nearby Mayan ruins.

We toured around the grounds looking at 1500 year old pyramids, sacrificial alters and the pitch for a ball game the Mayans would play. It was a great day and we even spotted some scarlet macaws sitting up in the trees.

Yesterday we embarked on a 7-hour journey from Copan to the coastside city of La Ceiba and this morning we were white water rafting in the beautiful Pico Bonito national park. Everybody had a brilliant time and only a few people fell in, including myself, and the guides where great. Top it off with a bowl of lovely spaghetti and today has been amazing.

We´re getting ready now to head on the Isla de Roatan and to start our project helping at the School of Life.

We are now safely in La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast. Since our last message in Copan Ruins we have travelled to the town of Gracias and now to here in La Ceiba. We spent three days in Gracias in a very nice hostel. While in Gracias we went to the hotsprings that were close to the town. We all thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing day there. After the hotsprings we also went on a walk through the areas national park. The walk was around four hours and at the end we got a nice view of a large waterfall and also got to see an abundance of plant and wild life. The other team were also staying in the same hostel as us in Gracias so we got to spend a few evenings with them to catch up on what they have been doing as well.

Today we are going to a service at the local church and from there going to the Helping Honduras Kids orphanage where we will meet the children we will be helping over the next week.

We will try and update you again when we get to Roatan.

Hope all is well back home.

We are now in Honduras, after finishing our first project phase on ometepe island, Nicaragua.

Our homestay experience was amazing and we are all missing our host families. They had so little but looked us so well.

Before leaving ometepe we managed to reach the summit of volcan maderas . It was a hard trek up but we were all in good spirits.  Coming down was an adventure as we got caught in an electric storm. Needless to say we are all a bit damp when we returned to the village.

Crossing the border into Honduras was an interesting experience. We got through eventually.

Honduras is beautiful, lots of rolling hills and forests. Today we are heading to Copan and tomorrow we will be exploring the ancient Mayan ruins there.

Knox Academy KWN make the headlines in the Edinburgh Evening News today... written by Laura Cummings, Education Reporter.

A HARD-HITTING documentary about knife crime produced by a group of Lothian school pupils is in line for a worldwide film prize.

Eight third-year pupils at Knox Academy in Haddington will join five other schools from across the globe at the awards ceremony of the Panasonic Kid Witness News (KWN) 2012 Global Contest, which will be held in London next month.

The teenagers’ four-minute documentary film, Think of Life Put Down the Knife, explored the issues around young people carrying knives, and saw the pupils interview Rev Cameron Mackenzie, who spent two years in jail as a young man after stabbing a rival in a gang fight.

He was later influenced by a spiritualist and eventually trained for the ministry. The former minister at the West Church in Haddington is now minister at the Tron Moredun and Gilmerton Church in Edinburgh.

He speaks about his troubled past in the film, as well as losing his younger brother to knife crime.... continued....

Project Phase 1 - La Esperanza School

We began painting classrooms so that the children had a nicer environment to learn in, the transformation was amazing!  In the afternoons we played with the kids; teaching them English, doing arts and crafts (funded by our donations to the project) and one evening we had a disco with them.  On the last day the school held a presentation for us with their national dances and dress, everyone recieved a certificate for their amazing work and effort over the few days! Having a fantastic time so far even though we´ve not showered in 3 days!

PS.. no rain and LOTS of sunshine!
