It has felt quite autumnal this week and rain definitely stopped everybody participating in outdoor play on two occasions, although a few hardy stalwarts kept going on the swings under the shelter. Fortunately we have a number of spaces that can be used flexibly and so pupils were able to let off steam in the gym or soft play room or ‘coorie in’ with a book or board game in the common room. We encourage pupils not to use electronic devices at these times but instead to participate in social activities which help to foster resilience, negotiation and fun. read more here ...Meadowpark newsletter 07.09.18

Now that we are well under way with the autumn term it is reassuring to observe pupils in Meadowpark using our environment pertaining to their needs. Tyre Island continues to be a magnetic draw for moments as diverse as exhilaration as well as for contemplation. The ‘bouy’ swing under the shelter has become a necessary and sensory focus for reducing anxiety for a young person who recently moved from Romania. We are all gleaning a little of what life has been like for one of our new pupils and recognise that his need to flee is because he can and be safe within our environment. He has a clear exit strategy and is beginning to accept that certain boundaries are in place not to restrict or inhibit him but to keep him safe. Read more here... Meadowpark Newsletter (Week 3).

On 2 July 2018, the Scottish Government published An Action Plan 2018-21: Consultation on Progressing Children's Rights in Scotland - An Action Plan 2018-21.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - what is it?
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international treaty that sets out the rights that all children and young people under the age of 18 have.

What are Rights?
Rights are about making sure people are treated well and get a fair deal.  They set out the sorts of things that must be put in place for this to happen.  Everybody has rights.  Children’s rights are human rights.  The rights set out in the UNCRC include, for example, the right of children and young people to an education, good quality health care, to be protected from being hurt or badly treated and the right to relax and play.

Please complete this shortened version of that consultation, designed for children and young people to complete so we can gain their views on the Action Plan..

It’s often said at the start of a new term ‘It doesn’t feel as if we’ve ever been away” but this year we have all benefited from the extraordinarily hot, dry summer holiday we have had. Pupils are eager to learn and genuinely refreshed.

However, I make no bones of the fact that I believe our approach to school holidays needs an overview and wrote a short piece in TES to that effect in 2013 read more here Meadowpark newsletter
