This year, National students will be studying a collection of poems by the poet Carol Ann Duffy.

Carol Ann Duffy was born 23 December 1955 in the Gorbals, Glasgow however when she was six her family moved to Stafford where her father worked. After completing Stafford Girls' School, Duffy studied at the University of Liverpool, receiving a degree in Philosophy in 1977. She became more widely known when she won the National Poetry Competition in 1983 . She has published many works including: Standing Femle Nude, Selling Manhattan and The Other Country. Duffy was appointed Poet Laureate in 2009, the first female in this role in 40 years and her poetry is widely recognised by a wide audience, hence the suitability for its use in both National 5 and Higher English courses.
