General News
Schools
Due to the continuing severe weather conditions, it has been confirmed that ALL East Lothian schools will remain closed to pupils on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 December. The forecast for Wednesday night is for worsening weather conditions with snowfalls of between 5 and 10cm and falls of 20-30 cm in some parts of the county.
Major efforts to open up safe access routes to schools will continue during the rest of the week. East Lothian Council appreciates that these closures are causing major inconvenience to parents and carers. However, every effort is being made to re-open schools in the face of unprecedented severe weather conditions and transport difficulties.
Further updates for this week will be added here in due course with information also being available on Radio Forth and school websites.
School staff should continue to follow the Policy on Employee Absence due to Adverse Weather conditions.

You can find a wide range of learning resources, suggested research activities and homework tasks – either on your own school’s Edubuzz pages or on any of the other school sites.
Our teaching staff are adding to and updating this information on a regular basis and many of them are available to contact by email. Edubuzz also gives you access to over 1000 other sites and the opportunity to network with more than 2000 contributors across East Lothian.

Our fantastic day out was to the Stock Market Challenge at the University of Edinburgh on Thursday 18 November 2010. There were 27 teams from Edinburgh and the Lothians. Our team members were: Louis Luke (3G3), Bethany Quirk (3L2), Gemma Robertson (3G1), Kerri Scambler (3L1) and Robbie Watson (3G1). We were the team that were picked from the S3 Business Management classes, after a competition using the classroom version of the Challenge.
In the Stock Market Challenge there were 5 days (25 minutes in real time) where we had to compete to earn the most money from our investments. Every team started out with £13,400 worth of different shares and euros. The teams were made up of 5 roles: the Finance Manager, the Investment Analyst, the Media Analyst, the Floor Trader Buyer and the Floor Trader Seller. When we were buying and selling we had to buy when the price was low and sell when the price was high. We bought 40,000 shares of Sago (a company) at £500 and sold them when they were high. At the end of all 5 days we doubled our money and made an overall of £80,300, and came 5th out of all 27 schools.
We all enjoyed the challenge. The skills that we demonstrated were teamwork, taking risks, communication and decision making. We look forward to continuing to use the classroom version of the Stock Market Challenge throughout our Standard Grade Business Management course.
On the evening of Wednesday 17 November, social networking was on the agenda for Advanced Higher Business Management pupils. Aileen McKnight, Rachael Weir and Christina Laing joined the Business Education staff, Mr Dempster, Mrs Ferguson, Mr McFarlane and Mr Flood, for a viewing of The Social Network at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh.
The evening was a great success where everyone gained further insight into the foundation of FaceBook Inc and Mark Zuckerberg's role as an entrepreneur. Many examples were demonstrated in the film which will be useful in discussion throughout the Advanced Higher Business Management course: different managerial styles, leadership, motivation, working as part of a team and the conflicts within that team, and changes that occur as a enterprise grows into a company with worldwide influence.
A fantastic evening, enjoyed by all concerned.
