August 2011

The school is off and running with the new term. On Tuesday morning, a group of 11 S2 pupils accompanied by the school Librarian, Mr Plain, attended an event at the Book Festival in Edinburgh. This was the ‘Best and Worse Times’ with Elizabeth Laird and Jason Wallace in the Scottish Power Studio. The authors discussed how their life experiences influenced their writing; both authors have lived outside the UK (Mr Wallace in Zimbabwe and Ms Laird in Iraq; Ethiopia; Turkey and Lebanon). Pupils had the chance to meet the authors by getting books signed at the end of the session as well as discovering the other tents available at the festival and Ruairidh Bruce managed to stump the authors by asking them to name their favourite book by other authors. Many thanks to Mr Plain who organised the trip (and reported that the pupils were a credit to the school).

Also on a literary note, congratulations to S2 pupil, Alexa Hay. Her poem, ‘Fire’, has been selected as a winning entry in the Tyne and Esk Writers and East Lothian and Midlothian Libraries, ‘Young Writer of the Year 2011’ competition. Alexa, family members and Mr Swinney (Head of English) will be attending the award ceremony on 26 September. Well done Alexa!

At lunchtimes from Monday to Thursday, S1 pupils were invited to participate in ‘Eco-week’. This was designed to encourage pupils to join the weekly Eco-club held every Tuesday in the Biology Department.  The activities included making jewellery from old magazines, making pen holders from fizzy drink cans, decorating plant pots and taking cuttings, (I am now the proud owner of a very fine pen holder).

Today we have the open afternoon for ‘Tots and Teens’ – a new idea in Community Playgroups. This is a very exciting initiative that will involve S3 pupils working with the playgroup that will be housed in the Crèche Room in Knox. Further details will follow, but in the meantime, best wishes to all involved for a successful launch and many years of happy learning and playing.

Best wishes.

During the holiday, a group of senior pupils, accompanied by Ms Duff and Mr Lambert, completed the final expedition for their Level 3 MAAP award. Also in early July, the S1 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) Challenge team, accompanied by Mr Blair and Ms Machen, were in London for the STEM Challenge 6 National final. Although the team did not win, they were praised for their participation and enthusiasm.  Mr. Blair reported that the pupils were very well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As the first team from Scotland to reach the final this was a fantastic achievement and they all seem keen to try again when the next Challenge comes along. Congratulations to all involved and thanks to the staff for giving up part of their holiday.

Only the first week back, but already, the school is hectic and busy. When the pupils returned on Wednesday, it was a delight to welcome the new S1 and they seem to have settled in very quickly. The new timetable is underway and, following the results, we have a few course changes for the seniors to complete.

Yesterday evening, a group of S4 pupils studying Drama, accompanied by Ms Whitfield, Mr Campbell and Ms Moffat, attended a performance on the Edinburgh Fringe. This was a site specific piece called ‘What Remains’, performed by ‘Grid Iron’ at the Edinburgh Medical School. The members of the Grid Iron company were very impressed by our pupils and said they would come to the school to discuss the piece and their work in general. Well done to the pupils and thanks to the staff involved.

Best wishes to all members of the school community for the new session.

I hope everyone has had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. By now, all S4-6 pupils should have received their results following the diet of examinations in May/June. Details of the school results will be available on the website soon. Overall, the results are very good, congratulations to all the candidates.

The school re-opens on Monday 15 August and pupils resume on Wednesday 17 August. I look forward to welcoming all pupils, and in particular, the ‘new’ S1.

Best wishes,
