April 2010

Most of you will be aware that the travel plans of several members of staff (including myself) were affected by the volcanic ash. I would like to thank all staff for their efforts, both in school covering classes and making sure ‘life goes on’ and those abroad who made valiant (and costly) arrangements to return home as soon as possible. Also, a big thank you to the pupils, their co-operation with staff during these difficult few days was exemplary.

For the pupils in S4 the SQA examinations began on Wednesday, many are still smiling so hopefully things are off to a good start.

Also on Wednesday was the S2 Parents Consultation Evening, this proved to be very busy. S2 Coursing is underway and I look forward to receiving the completed course choice sheets from the pupils.

Pupils in S1-3 are looking forward to Activities Week (10-14 May). The programme is packed with exciting opportunities. Some of the trips will leave at the end of next week.

Calendar change: the Scottish Government has allocated an addition in-service day for staff to develop the Curriculum for Excellence. East Lothian has identified Wednesday 18 August as this additional in-service day. Therefore, pupils will resume school after the summer holiday on Thursday 19 August 2010.

Monday 3 May is a holiday, school resumes on Tuesday 4.

Best wishes to everyone for the holiday weekend.

Despite some absences thanks to the Eyjafjoell volcano, we have got right back into the swing of things.  The first “week” back started with the rescheduled Spring Concert.  Words and music were well remembered and all the pieces were played and sung with conviction, and let’s face it, a lot of talent.  Huge thanks go to all involved, especially the Music Instructors who altered their usual Tuesday plans to come in to rehearse with their pupils.

The S2 Parents’ Consultation Evening will take place on Wednesday, starting at 5 pm.  All of the youngsters should be in the process of making appointments – so do check their bags for the sheets!  Coursing will begin at the end of the week.

Finally, during the week, we will be saying “au revoir” to our S4 pupils as they go on exam leave.  Hopefully they have taken in all the advice that they have been given – most importantly to turn up to their exams on time, and not to take mobile ‘phones into the exam hall.  We wish them all the best, and look forward to hearing of their success.

Today the school closes for the spring holiday.

For the pupils in S4/5/6, a full Easter Revision programme has been planned and I would encourage the pupils to attend the relevant parts of the programme, details of which have been issued to all senior pupils.

As most of you will be aware, the Spring Concert, scheduled for last night had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions. However, this does mean we have a lovely event to look forward to, as the concert has been re-arranged for the evening of Tuesday 20 April – the first day back!

Term finishes today at 4 pm and the summer term begins on Tuesday 20 April at 8.44 am.

Best wishes to everyone for the spring break,

JB Craig
